The May Splint is a mandibular splint that is designed to disengage the patient’s habitual occlusal relationship. This splint is usually designed to only allow contact to occur in the first molar region. By using this splint to relieve dental stress, proponents of this technique have been successfully treating a variety of symptoms throughout the body. Advanced study of the technique seems to be a prerequisite to optimum results with this appliance. The design of this appliance utilizes a lingual acrylic reinforcement with a twisted stainless steel strengthening wire to support the occlusal pads. The lingual anterior acrylic is finished up against the incisors at the level of the cingulum providing added support and increasing the strength of the appliance. Interproximal ball clasps can be added for retention as needed.
